BIOGRAPHY
Sandy Powell is an award-winning costume designer who began her career after dancer and choreographer Lindsay Kemp commissioned her to design and make her show about ballet dancer Nijinsky. After that job, Powell made the jump to film, after director Derek Jarman became her mentor. She received her first Oscar nomination for Best Costume Design for her work on Orlando (1992) and, to date, has been nominated 13 more times for films such as Gangs of New York (2002), The Invention of Hugo Cabret ( 2011), Cinderella (2015) and Carol (2015), and has won it three times for the films Passionate Shakespeare (1998), The Aviator (2004) and The Young Queen (2009). In 2011 she was awarded the OBE for her services to the film industry. Her most recent Oscar nominations were for Mary Poppins Returns (2018) and The Favorite (2018), however, she lost that year to Ruth E. Carter, who did the costume design for Black Panther (2018).
