His journalism portfolio has seen his work for prestigious networks such as ESPN and ABC. She resumed in 2005 as co-host of ABC Good Morning America. And since then, she has secured high profile interviews with Chris Brown, Nate Parker and Barack Obama. Roberts’ fighting spirit is shown in how she fought through periods of her life with breast cancer and bone marrow disease and emerged victorious. She is also a member of the Panthers of Sports Broadcasting and Women’s Basketball Fame.

Biography of Robin Roberts

The presenter is the last child of four – Sally-Ann, Lawrence Jr. and Dorothy – born to his parents, Colonel Lawrence Roberts and Lucimarian Roberts. She was born in Vermont on November 23, 1960. However, she grew up in Mississippi, where she played table tennis and basketball at Pass Christian High School.

After graduating in 1979 as a Salutatorian class, she then attended Southeastern Louisiana University. Louisiana State University was her first choice, but she turned down their basketball scholarship after visiting the institution and didn’t like the feel of it.

She instead signed up for a journalism scholarship at Southeastern where she also played basketball for the school’s Lady Lion team. She graduated cum laude in 1983 with a degree in communications and an enviable record in the history of women’s basketball football. Robin Roberts left the Southeast as the third-leading scorer in team history. Her impact on school sports was so profound that she was honored years later in 2011, when Southeastern decided to retire her number 21 jersey.

After her time in college, she took a job as a sports reporter for local WDAM-TV in her native Mississippi. By the end of the 1980s, she had added several other television channels to her professional experience. These included WLOX-TV (Biloxi, Mississippi); WSMV-TV (Nashville, TN); and WAGA-TV and radio station V-103 (Atlanta, Georgia).

She became a sportswoman with the prestigious sports network ESPN in 1990. It was here that Roberts rose to prominence and spent much of her career in journalism.

Although Robin Roberts was officially on ABC’s books in 2005 as a co-host of Good Morning America (GMA), she had already worked for the network group as a featured reporter for a decade, fulfilling dual roles at ESPN and ABC. . In 2005, she began hosting the GMA show with Diane Sawyer, who was to hand over to George Stephanopoulos in December 2009.

While Diane was set as an ABC WorldNews anchor, Roberts and Stephanopoulos proved to be a star team and brought the show’s destiny back to life. Three years after their on-screen relationship began, in April 2012, GMA was once again the most popular TV show in the country. This is after the top spot was held by NBC Today for 16 straight years.

Over the years on GMA, Robin Roberts has proven his ability to annoy and even annoy high profile guests. A perfect example would be his constant pursuit of Chris Brown over his relationship with Rihanna in 2011. In November 2016, she also Birth of a Nation producer Nate Parker went on to speak out about rape allegations he had made investigated and acquitted almost two decades earlier.

Aside from her work as an on-station co-anchor, she has also served in other equally huge capacities. In 2009 and 2011, she hosted the ABC Awards pre-show at the Oscars and also made a guest appearance in 2010 on an episode of Disney’s Hannah Montana. She also had the honor of being ABC’s on-site reporter for the infamous royal wedding between Prince Harry and actress Meghan Markle

Robin Roberts has received a plethora of recognition for his work in athletics, sports broadcasting and journalism in general. In 2012, she became a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. Four years later, she was again a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. She also received the Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Journalism; the Mel Greenberg Media Award; and the recipient of the 2018 Radio Television Digital News Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award, among others.

Fight cancer and bone marrow disease

Roberts’ demons came in terms of poor health, but she overcame every time. Her first documented bout with the disease came in 2007, when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, albeit at an early stage. She went under the knife in August of that year and followed it up with a number of chemotherapy and radiotherapy sessions before the end of January 2008. She was eventually in remission.

Four years later, she had a type of bone marrow disease, myelodysplastic syndrome. Unable to continue working, she stepped away from her GMA duties to focus on recovery. She underwent a bone marrow transplant with her sister, Sally-Ann Roberts, acting as a donor in October 2012 and remained in place for four months after the procedure, finally returning to the screen on February 20, 2013, to the great enjoyment of viewers.

Two of Robin’s awards came in the form of a 2012 Peabody Award and a 2013 Arthur Ashe Courage Award. These were in recognition of her courage in granting ABC permission to follow and document her battle with the disease. This effort has helped inspire people with the same disease while encouraging those considering becoming bone marrow donors.

Relationship with Amber Laign

Prior to 2005, Roberts’ sexuality was not widely held as a secret, especially to his co-workers. However, that year she officially came out when she started dating a woman named Amber Laign. A graduate of the Swedish Institute, Amber earns her living as a licensed massage therapist, primarily helping people in recovery.

She also has a background in the fashion world, having worked for nine years at the fashion house Berger & Stevens before becoming a massage therapist. Perhaps buoyed by Robin’s battle with cancer, Amber started a company, Plant Juice Oils, which focuses on essential oils and CBD blends, particularly for women with cancer and postmenopausal women.

Robin Roberts was one of the names on the Forum for Equality’s list of 31 LGBT History Month Icons of 2015.

According to Money, Roberts’ salary for the year ending June 2017 was $18 million. Excluding Fox News’ Sean Hannity, NBC’s Roberts and Megyn Kelly are the highest-paid television presenters in the country.
