In the 2005 NFL draft, Robbie Gouldunger lost hope of ever being a part of the league. This was also because the teams he’d teamed with at various times as an undrafted free agent were never patient to see him play his cards. Frustration soon set in and took a good hold, so he made the hasty decision to leave the pigskin sport and started working for a construction company. How ironic!
While residing in his self-professed football exile, the Chicago Bears argued that Robbie Gould had a future in football, considered making him an offer and subsequently welcomed him with open arms at Soldier Field. He joined the team and there were no regrets as he stayed with them for over 5 years. He then moved on to other teams in the National Football League (NFL) and has been consistently impressive on the grid. He sure knows how to bring out the best in himself.
Robbie Gould’s bio
There aren’t many details about the kicker’s upbringing and growing up. This is not surprising since the player is said to be a reserved and quiet person, not a great talker. Despite this, we do know that Robbie Gould is one of two children born to Cheryl and Robert Gould. His brother’s name is Chris Gould. Robbie is among those born in the world’s most famous month. He was born in the month of Christmas (December), exactly on the 6th in 1982.
His father gained experience as a soccer player in his prime and is considered a three-time All-American soccer player. To get the best out of his boys, Robert would often take his boys, Robbie and Chris, onto the field at Central Mountains School to teach them the basics of the game. He nurtured his boys and those tiny lessons gave birth to today’s Robbie Gould.
Having learned the basics from his father when it came time for high school, Robbie stood out among his peers at Central Mountain High School, playing soccer, football, basketball and running on the track. Robbie continued to work at Penn State University, progressing academically and was also a mainstay with the Nittany Lions. During his studies, everyone thought he would follow his father’s path as a football player as he was also good at the game. Instead, he chose to play American football. At the end of his stint with the Nittany Lions, there was a total of 115 extra point attempts and 39 field goal attempts.
NFL career
Despite Gould’s impressive athletic records, he did not qualify for the 2005 National Football League (NFL) draft. That didn’t initially stop him from pursuing his career the way he wanted, so he accepted the New England Patriots’ offer to play as a kicker that year. Shortly after his contract with them ended, he joined the Baltimore Ravens but was later waived. This act was quite disheartening for the all-round athlete, which is why he signed off from football to work in a construction company.
Robbie Gould returned to the NFL after 2005. The Chicago Bears replaced him in an emergency with their kicker Doug Brien, who sustained an injury in one of their games. In Robbie’s first game with the team, he recorded his first NFL field goal and win. He did his best and broke Kevin Butler’s record for consecutive field goals when he scored 26 consecutive field goals during the 2006 NFL season. During the same period, the soccer player was named NFL Special Teams Player of the Month and NFC’s Kicker for the 2007 Pro Bowl competition.
The Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania-born soccer player proved himself in his subsequent games with the team, and his wildly successful form earned him a five-year contract extension with the Bears. He scored a career-winning goal in a game against the Carolina Panthers. With the team he always had more wins than losses. Robbie Gould had his fill with the Bears and switched to the New York Giants, playing briefly with the team and joining the San Francisco 49ners.
To this day, the 49ers have never regretted their decisions to sign him to their team. He showed everything he learned from his previous teams and improved a lot in most of his games. Additionally, Robbie was chosen as the substitute for the 2018 Pro Bowl.
His family – wife and children
Robbie Gould found love in the arms of a waitress; Lauren. While serving Robbie and his friends who came to relax at one of the cozy spots in Hilltop, she caught his attention and that was it, their love story began.
Details about their relationship are nowhere near the spotlight. No one would have known about their union if Robbie hadn’t accidentally mentioned her wedding plans in a candid interview. From what we’ve gathered, they had a very quiet wedding in February 2013. Their union is blessed with two sons.
