Phil Robertson: biography, family, education
Robertson was born Phil Alexander Robertson on April 24, 1946, in Vivian, Louisiana, United States. He was born the fifth of seven children born to Merritt and James Robertson. He grew up in difficult conditions growing fruits and vegetables, hunting animals and fish. Due to unstable economic conditions, his family was forced to live in a house without light, toilet or bathtub, however, he remembers saying that they were happy with the circumstances they had to face.
He was very active in sports, especially football, from his high school which led him to join Louisiana Tech in Ruston. Therefore, he attended college after earning a football scholarship in the late 1960s. There he played for the Bulldogs as the front-row quarterback, ahead of Terry Bradshaw, who went on to play professionally in the National Football League (NFL). Phil played as a starter for the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs football team for one year and decided not to play the following season. After that, he graduated from Louisiana Tech with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. Thereafter, he began to work as a school teacher for one year.

However, during the early years of his career, he became a teacher, but later left the job to devote his full attention to becoming a duck hunter. As an avid duck hunter, he was not satisfied with the calls of the ducks. So, he invented his first call Duck Commander in 1972. After receiving a patent for this call, he created the incorporated company ‘Duck Commander Company’ in 1973. The company today is run by his son Willie Robertson.
As a reality television star, he first appeared on his family’s reality show ‘Duck Dynasty,’ which aired on A&E. The show garnered massive popularity breaking the all-time ratings record for A&E network shows. The show aired from 2012 to 2017, showing her daily life inside Duck Commander. But in 2013, the show suspended Phil after he interviewed Drew Magary to comment on anti-gays and black people.
