She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada as the youngest son of David W. Lecciones and Gloria B. Doig. Her mother was not a Native Canadian, but a registered nurse from a town in the Philippines called Dumaguete. His father, an engineer, is an Aboriginal Canadian, but of Scottish and Irish ancestry.

Growing up, Lexa Doig studied gymnastics as a child and later, as a teenager, decided to study American Sign Language. She became interested in acting at a very young age of 9 after watching a theater production of Porgy and Bess.
