Basic information about Jon Gruden

Jon, addressed in full as Jon David Gruden was born by Kathy Gruden in Sandusky, Ohio to his father Jim Gruden on August 17, 1963. His father was a professional regional football scout and director of player personnel for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Jon attended Clay High School in South Bend, Indiana, and was a Cleveland Browns fan while growing up. He graduated from high school in 1981 and later attended Muskingum College in New Concord, Ohio. He transferred to the University of Dayton after a year at Muskingum and in Dayton he became three-year Letterman and backup quarterback for the Flyers. The year 1985 marked his graduation with a communications degree but never saw much football playing time with the Flyers.

College Coaching Career

After college, Jon Gruden quickly became more involved in football when he was named a graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee for the 1985 and 86 football seasons. At the end of his short stint there, he spent the the next two years as a quarterback coach for the Southeastern United States from Missouri before being hired as an assistant coach by the University of the Pacific in 1989. In 1990, he moved to the 49ers from San Francisco as special assistant to quarterback coach Mike Holmgren, as his transfer to the University of Pittsburgh as receivers coach received the end of his college coaching career in 1991.

Professional Coaching Career

Jon was then hired by his former boss, Mike Holmgren who offered the position of Special Assistant Offensive/Receiver Coach with the Green Bay Packers. He spent three seasons with the team before becoming the Philadelphia Eagles’ offensive coordinator under former Packers assistant coach Ray Rhodes. Jon became head coach of the Oakland Riders in 1998 after being picked by Oakland Raiders owner and general manager Al Davis.

With the Runners, Jon Gruden saw them to three consecutive playoffs in three seasons. The team had its best run of the decade in 2000, going 12-4. They reached the AFC Championship but ultimately lost 16-3 to the Super Bowl-winning Baltimore Ravens.

He joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002 and set his sights on the floor revamping the team’s offensive strategy in addition to improving other aspects of the ailing team. His efforts here paid off as the team won the NFC Championship Game and Super Bowl XXXVII.

The year 2006 kind of marked the decline of his coaching career with the Buccaneers as they recorded their biggest loss of a season with him, 4-12. The coach continued to deal with numerous issues, such as player injuries, loss of draft picks, and salary caps over the ensuing seasons. He recorded some earnings but was eventually released in 2010, after which he became a volunteer assistant offensive line coach at Carrollwood Day School in Tampa, Florida, and also founded the Fired Football Coaches Association.

In 2009, a new chapter in his football career came when he was hired by ESPN as a color analyst for its Monday Night Football show. Jon became heavily involved with ESPN in the years that followed, having analyzed NFL drafts and college football games.

Surprisingly but remarkably, Jon Gruden saw himself on the coaching side of the grid when he was named head coach of the Oakland Raiders after nine years as a coach. The Ohio native signed a 10-year, $100 million contract with the team, which became the biggest record in league history on January 6, 2018.
