Joey Heatherton was born Davenie JohannaHeatherton on September 14, 1944. The name Joey was a nickname she used as a child. She grew up in Rockville Center in New York City and attended Saint Agnes Academy. She was interested in showbiz from a young age and took various classes such as ballet, jazz dance and acting to prepare for the future. Heatherton began her career as a teenager and her first TV appearance was on the popular kiddies TV show known as The Jolly Postman. From there she was seen in a few stage productions on Broadway.
The cult actress burst into the spotlight in Berlin in 1959 thanks to her appearance on The Perry Como Show . Her excellent performance won her nationwide fame and she became a staple on most variety shows that dominated television in those days. These include The Ed Sullivan Show, The Tonight Show With Johnny Carson , and The Dean Martin Show . While appearing on these shows, Joey Heatherton also built an impressive acting career. Joey Heatherton has only been married once. In April 1969, she bonded with Lance Rentzel, a National Football League (NFL) player. Rentzel was a huge fan and played for teams such as the Minnesota Vikings, Dallas Cowboys and Los Angeles Rams during his ten-year stint in the NFL. The couple’s union lasted just a year before her husband was arrested for unlawfully exposing himself to an underage girl in November 1970.
The arrest caused a major scandal and it emerged that Rentzel had committed a similar crime in 1966. The publicity was harsh and unrelenting, and Heatherton filed for divorce in September 1971, which was finalized in 1972. She has remained unmarried since then.
