Music is something that easily unites everyone because it comes in so many forms, is practiced by everyone, and even crosses demographic, racial and religious barriers. Over the years, certain Jews have continued to play an influential role in reshaping music in America and Jewish-American multi-instrumentalist Jack Antonoff is one of them.

Even though Antonoff knew from childhood that he was supposed to be a musician, he didn’t start until his second year in high school, when he formed a band with some elementary school friends. Today it has become a spectacular force in the competitive industry. Jack has achieved a lot despite his short stint in show business – he has his own music festival, multiple awards, nominations and writing credits.

Biography of Jack Antonoff

Although the musician is popularly known as JackAntonoff, his full name is Jack Michael Antonoff. He was born as the middle child of his parents on March 31, 1984 in Bergenfield, New Jersey. Jack was born to Rick Antonoff and Shira Antonoff, parents of his young siblings – Sarah Antonoff (who died of brain cancer aged 13) and Rachel Antonoff (renowned fashion designer). The American musician has Jewish heritage and was raised in the New Jersey towns of Woodcliff and New Milford.

Antonoff completed his elementary education at Solomon Schechter Day School in Bergen County and later enrolled in the Professional Children’s School with his sister.

Entering his second year in high school in 1998, with the help of elementary school friends, he formed a punk rock band called Outline. Jack started out as the band’s lead singer until Eddie Wright came along and took over vocals. Prior to Wright’s arrival, the band had been able to release a self-titled EP in January 2000 through a record label, then record and release six songs with Eddie’s help.

The following year, the band released an album titled A Boy Can Dream through Triple Crown Records. Building on this success, Jack and one of his bandmates began booking shows in several states, including Texas and Florida. Unfortunately, the group survived only in 2002, but this did not prevent Antonoff from realizing his dream. He later met a friend (Scott Irby-Ranniar) the same year and together they formed a band called Steel Train. He then joined pop group Fun, and also contributed to the writing of their second album, Certain Nights in 2012, following the release of their debut album Aim and Ignite, in 2009.

Besides being a phenomenal singer and songwriter, Jack Antonoff is a record producer, bassist, pianist, drummer, guitarist and mandolin player. Since his breakthrough into mainstream success, he has collaborated with notable bands and artists such as Bleachers (indie band), Lana Del Rey (American singer), Lorde (New Zealand singer), Pink (American singer), Charli XCX ( English singer) and many more. Most significant of all is his collaboration with Taylor Swift, the music producer, in producing a song called Sweeter Than Fiction in 2013. The son, which was basically written for the movie, One Chance, earned him a Golden Globe nomination.

Antonoff has also won three Grammy Awards. One for ‘Album of the Year’ for her involvement with Swift’s fifth studio album, 1989. This is followed by two for her role in the band, Fun, including an award for writing the song We Are Young, which he wrote with co-musicians Jeff Bhasker, Andrew Dost and Nate Ruess. In 2018, he wrote a song for Swift titled: I Don’t Want to Live Forever, won a nomination for Best Original Song at the Satellite Awards while another project he was working on – Love, Simon (romantic comedy-drama American for Teens) was nominated for the 2019 Satellite Awards.

Relationships and business

Antonoff is said to be in a relationship with a model/photographer called Carlotta Kohl. However, neither the musician nor Kohl has confirmed the relationship. Jack Antonoff had previously dated American actress Lena Dunham, daughter of filmmaker Laurie Simmons and painter Carroll Dunham. They started dating in April 2012 and had an “amicable” split in December 2017.

The musician lived with Lena in Brooklyn Heights throughout the period they dated. Antonoff also had a short-lived relationship with actress Scarlett Johansson, who was his classmate at Professional Children’s School.

Net value

There’s no doubt the Bergenfield, New Jersey-born multi-instrumentalist is already on the path to greatness. As of 2018, he has a net worth of $4 million, which he has amassed through his involvement in music and collaborating with influential people.
