Norman L. Abram was born on the 3rd of October 1949 in the town of Woonsocket, Rhode Island. He grew up in the New England area and attended Milford High School in Massachusetts. He then studied mechanical engineering and business administration at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.
Norm Abram fell in love with his craft at a young age. His father was a carpenter and bought him his first tool set (a Handy Andy Tool Set) when he was out of diapers. As he got older, his father took him to his jobs and he helped out where he could. By the age of 15, Norm Abram was already working as a carpenter for the same company his father worked for. However, he limited his working hours to summer and school holidays so that his studies would not derail.

After graduating from college, Norm Abram joined a large construction company as a construction manager. He worked for the company for three years before opening his own general contractor company (Integrated Structures) in 1976.
How did Abram get into television? In 1979 he was commissioned to build a garage and a garden shed for the home of PBS producer and director Russell Morash. Impressed by the quality of Abrams’ work, Morash asked him to help them convert an abandoned house for the purposes of a television show. This was the humble beginning of This Old House ; the longest running home improvement trade show in America.
