Music and music career of Lalah Hathaway
Lalah Hathaway was born to the legendary soul singer and his wife Eulaulah Hathaway on December 16, 1968. Lalah has a younger sister in Kenya and she was just eleven years old when her father passed away. In 1990, at the age of twenty-two, almost eleven years after Danny’s death. Lalah kicked off her musical career as a soul singer with her self-titled album which reached the Billboard Hot 200 with a peak of 191 and a Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums ranking at eighteen.
“Heaven Knows” and “Baby”, the first track from the album Don’t Cry” both reached the Hot R&B Chart peaking at numbers 3 and 18 respectively. Another single from the album “It’s Somethin'” also charted at number twenty-first on the Hot R&B charts. In 1991, she released an EP. Nuit Jour in Japan, while the single was released in the United States and reached number ten on the Hot R&B chart. The following year (1992), Lalah sang on Grover Washington’s album. Next released and her debut single “ Love So ” peaked at #31 on the chart.
In 1994, Lalah Hathaway dropped her second album A Moment which charted on the Top R&B Albums chart as well as The Heatseekers charted at number 34 and 23 respectively. produced by Brian Alexander Morgan and made its chart debut. The album, however, did not do well as a debut album.
After a while, Hathaway released six more albums; The Song Lives (along with Joe Sample), Outrun the Sky released in 2004, followed by Self Portrait, Where It All Begins came in 2011, Lalah Hathaway Live in 2015 and her final album Honestly released in 2017. The Song Lives On figure on the Jazz album chart 2; it became his second album on the Billboard Hot 200 and would later appear on the Top R&B Albums chart. The album also won the Billboard/BET on Jazz Award for Best Mainstream Jazz Album.
Nearly three decades of Lalah Hathaway in the music industry, she has worked with several other talented artists in the industry such as Sample. For example, she has worked with artists like Mary J Blige, The Winans, Take 6 and even Marcus Miller. She was the lead singer on Donald Lawrence’s first solo album Je parle de la vie. In 2005, she took part in the Daughters of Soul international tour alongside Nona Hendryx, Sandra St. Victor, Joyce Kennedy and Simone. She was also featured on Israel’s 2006 Christmas album and New Breed’s A Timeless Christmas the following year.
Besides the Billboard/BET on Jazz Awards, Hathaway has won several other notable awards, including four Grammy Awards and four ASCAP Awards.
