Iris Weinshall is an American civil servant and wife of US Senator Chuck Schumer. She is the Chief Operating Officer of the New York Public Library. Prior to her last position, Iris served in a variety of other capacities, including Assistant Commissioner for Management and Budget for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection and Commissioner for the City Department of Transportation. Like her husband, who has a reputation as one of America’s most successful and most admired politicians, Weinshall has enjoyed tremendous success in her career in addition to her personal and family life.

Iris Weinshall’s bio

Iris Weinshall was born on September 5, 1953 in Brooklyn, New York City of the United States of America. After her elementary, middle and high school education, Iris enrolled at Brooklyn College, where she received her first degree. She then earned a master’s degree in public administration from New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service.

After completing her studies, Iris Weinshalleine became a civil servant, having held various positions in the New York City Government throughout her career. She started out as senior vice president of the New York State Urban Development Corporation. Weinshall then served as regional vice president of Integrated Resources, Inc. She later became president of the Financial Services Corporation, a nonprofit organization in New York’s economic development programs.

For a period of eight years (1988-1996), IrisWeinshall served as Deputy Commissioner of Management and Budget for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. She then moved to the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, serving as first deputy commissioner.

By 2000, Weinshall became the commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). She served in that capacity until 2007, when the City University of New York appointed its Vice Chancellor for Building Design, Construction and Management. As NYC DOT Commissioner, Weinshall embarked on various programs and projects that addressed various key areas, including an improved bicycle system, improved traffic flow, bridge/road safety, and maintenance.

In 2014, Iris Weinshall became Chief Operating Officer of the New York Public Library.

Meet Iris Weinshall’s children

Iris Weinshall has two adult children with her husband, Chuck Schumer. The duo met in 1975 at a Democrat convention in Midwood, Brooklyn. Their first encounter in the speech was that Chuck asked Iris to allow him to speak in front of her at the event, a request which she granted, spellbound by the former’s charm!

Weinshall and Schumer later married on the 21st day of September 1980 in Lower Manhattan, NYC. The wedding ceremony took place right in the window of the World Restaurant on the top floor of the North Tower of the World Trade Center.

In 1984, Iris welcomed her first child, a daughter named Jessica Emily Schumer. In 1989 she gave birth to her second child, also a daughter, Alison Emma Schumer. Weinshall’s two daughters graduated from their father’s alma mater – Harvard College. However, their professions are different. While Jessica pursues a political career like her father, Alison works as a marketing manager at Facebook in NYC. The former was a member of the US Presidency’s Council of Economic Advisers (CEA), rising to Chief of Staff and General Counsel in 2013.

In 2011, Jessica worked at the CEASchumer met counselor Michael Shapiro, with whom she shared the same workspace on the second floor of the West Wing office of the White House. They later became friends but didn’t start dating until 2013 after Michael left CEA for law school. The duo later married in April 2016.

Alison Schumer, on the other hand, is a lesbian. On Sunday, November 18, 2018, she married a fellow wife, Elizabeth Weiland. The weekend after their wedding (Saturday, November 24), Iris Weinshall and her husband Chuck Schumer became first-time grandparents after Jessica welcomed their first child (a son). with Michael Shapiro. They called him Noah Melvin Schumer-Shapiro.
