Derek Carr was born Derek Dallas Carr on March 28, 1991 in Fresno, Bakersfield, California. He is a United States citizen of White ethnicity. He attended Bakersfield Christian High School after returning to Bakersfield in his senior year with his family, having moved to Sugar Land with his family in his early years.

He began his football career playing for Clements High School in Texas, spending three promising seasons before transferring to Bakersfield Christian High School in California, where he continued playing.

He spent his collegiate career with the Fresno State Bulldogs, where he left remarkable records. His older brother, David Carr, is also an NFL quarterback who played at Fresno State.
