His father, Douglas Gilmour, was a lecturer at Cambridge University while his mother, Sylvia Gilmour, trained as a teacher and eventually worked as a film editor for the BBC.
He was born in Cambridgeshire on March 6, 1946. After living in different places for ten years, his parents finally settled in Grantchester Meadows, where he grew up.

Before the age of ten he fell deeply in love with music and learned to play musical instruments. David’s passion for music and desire to be a musician drove him on a tour of Europe during which he and his friends including Syd Barrett performed at various small venues in Europe, due to the financial unproductivity this resulted in, that Gilmour was being treated in a hospital for malnutrition.

David Gilmour first married Virginia Hasenbein, an American model, with whom he had four children – Alice, Sara, Matthew and Claire. His marriage to Hasenbein ended in 1990 and he remarried in 1994 to journalist and copywriter Polly Samson. His second marriage produced four children – Charlie, Joe, Gabriel and Romany, giving him eight children in all.
