David Gilmour – biography

One of the interesting things about modern life is how a child can be born to parents in one profession and make a name for themselves in a completely different profession that has global implications. It’s a progressive departure from the old world that was all about following in your parents’ footsteps. The story is the same for David Gilmour, whose parents were mostly academics. His father, Douglas Gilmour, was a lecturer at Cambridge University while his mother, Sylvia Gilmour, trained as a teacher and eventually worked as a film editor for the BBC.

He was born in Cambridgeshire on March 6, 1946. After living in different places for ten years, his parents finally settled in Grantchester Meadows, where he grew up.

The key to getting great sometimes is to have someone at the bottom to encourage you in the early stages. David Gilmour had that with his parents, who encouraged his passion for music despite their different career choices. Before the age of ten he fell deeply in love with music and learned to play musical instruments. Of all the different types of musical instruments, Gilmour chose to learn the guitar and as the day progressed he gained experience on the strings. Sources say the song, Bye, Honey , inspired a strong passion for the guitar that eventually led him to be number 14 on Rolling Stone’s Greatest Guitarist of All Time.

Though David Gilmour wasn’t a fan of attending school, he was allowed to meet two would-be members of Pink Floyd because of his insistence on attending the Perse school. In 1962 he joined his first band. David’s passion for music and desire to be a musician drove him on a tour of Europe during which he and his friends including Syd Barrett performed at various small venues in Europe, due to the financial unproductivity this resulted in, that Gilmour was being treated in a hospital for malnutrition.

He joined Pink Floyd in 1968 and was a member of the group during the release of some of their top-rated and commercially successful albums, including The Dark Side of the Moon and I Wish You Were Here . He was with Pink Floyd for 46 years until 2014, when the band finally broke up and took over as the band’s lead in 1985. Pink Floyd released a total of 15 studio albums and 3 live albums. David Gilmour himself has released four studio albums and two live albums as a solo artist. He has achieved several milestones in his career, including being made Commander-in-Chief of the Order of the British Empire, bestowed on him in 2003.

Family – wife, children

David Gilmour first married Virginia Hasenbein, an American model, with whom he had four children – Alice, Sara, Matthew and Claire. His marriage to Hasenbein ended in 1990 and he remarried in 1994 to journalist and copywriter Polly Samson. His second marriage produced four children – Charlie, Joe, Gabriel and Romany, giving him eight children in all.
