As an American, the first intriguing thing about this star is its name, Chi. Born as Kenneth McBride, he opted for “Chi,” an abbreviated form of his hometown, Chicago, and is pronounced “Shy.” Born September 23, 1961, Chi was raised in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He attended Shiloh Academy, currently known as Chicago SDA Academy, an institution owned and operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. After school, Chi was torn between sticking to music, not just music but singing in the choir, or escaping his beloved hometown of Chicago. In 1986, Chi left Chicago and moved to Atlanta. He started working as a billing clerk at AT&T.

After nearly giving up on his show biz career, he got his lucky break when his song He’s the Champion became a hit. The song – A parody of the wedding of actress Robin Givens and boxer Mike Tyson. Seemingly impressed with his talent, Chi was signed up to Esquire Records and joined the R&B group Covert.

After signing his contract, Chi stepped out for California to shoot a music video in 1991. On set, the producer saw McBride dancing and doing impressions of Jesse Jackson and Arnold Schwarzenegger. He immediately sets out to convince Chi that he’s going to make more money in LA with his talent. After Chi auditioned for a sequel to the Fox TV-produced feature Revenge of the Nerds, he was convinced that LA was the city for him. He moved back to Atlanta and quit his job at AT&T.
