François Joachim de Pierre de Bernis, better known as Jean-François de Bernis, is a famous French politician and prelate of the 18th century. Born on May 22, 1715 in Saint-Marcel-d’Ardèche, he came from a noble family in the region. His father, Paul-Joachim de Pierre de Bernis, is lord of Saint-Marcel and Montfleury. He married Jeanne-Chrétienne de Vienne in 1729, with whom he had two children, Jeanne-Marie-Madeleine and Jean-Charles. 

The career of François Joachim de Pierre de Bernis began in the clergy. He was ordained a priest in 1736 and became a canon in Lyon. His talent and charm allowed him to quickly enter the influential circles of the time, notably thanks to his proximity to the Cardinal of Tencin, who would become his protector. His political career began in 1744 when he was appointed ambassador to Venice. He then held various diplomatic posts, notably in Constantinople, Rome and Vienna. 

In 1752, he was made bishop of Dijon by King Louis XV. However, he resigned from this position in 1754 to devote himself fully to politics. François Joachim de Pierre de Bernis is experiencing a meteoric rise in the political world. In 1756, he was appointed Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, then Minister of State in 1757. He worked in particular to improve France’s relations with the other European powers, and played a determining role in the signing of the treaty of Paris in 1763, ending the Seven Years’ War. 

Unfortunately, his political influence declined in the late 1760s, notably because of court intrigues and rivalries with other ministers. He was finally recalled by the Pope in 1794 and retired to his property near Montpellier. François Joachim de Pierre de Bernis died on November 3, 1794, leaving behind an important political legacy and a reputation as a skillful and eloquent diplomat.
