Gemma also had family ties to Ecuador, as her paternal great-grandfather, Carlo Gemma, was from that country. Although Gemma did not have a privileged childhood, he was supported by his family and was able to follow his passion for cinema. In 1959, he married Livia Giampalmo, an Italian actress, and together they had two children, Vera and Giuliana. However, their marriage ended in 1977 and Gemma remarried another Italian actress, Barbara Lazaroff, in 1983.
