Bobby Lee was born as Robert Lee, Jr. to his parents – Robert and Jeanie Lee on September 17, 1971, in San Diego, California. He is the first of two sons in the family. From the age of 12, Lee went into rehab after a severe abuse of methamphetamine and marijuana. However, he came clean at the age of 17.

Lee left his parents’ home at the age of 18 after graduating from Poway High School in Poway, California. He worked in restaurants and cafes to make ends meet, and at the same time he attended Palomar College.

His acting career began when in 1994 he lost his job at the cafe after the business closed. Afterwards, he worked odd jobs at the La Jolla Comedy Store in San Diego and then tried his hand at stand-up at one of the club’s amateur nights. A year later, he received offers for Pauly Shore and Carlos Mencia. He also got a regular job at The Comedy Store in Los Angeles owned by Mitzi, Pauly Shore’s mother.

Lee became Mad TV’s only East Asian cast member in 2001 and remained so until the series ended in 2009. He returned for a brief stint when MADtv returned to action in 2016 on The CW.

Notably, Lee relapsed into drug abuse when a crazy TV producer told him that they won’t be using him much on the show because he’s not funny enough. It ended his 12 years of sobriety, but he got sober soon after MadTV producer Lauren Dombrowski intervened in his case on the show.
