Ben Carson: biography

The gifted neurosurgeon was born on September 18, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan. Previously, his parents (Robert Carson Jr. and Sonya Carson) lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee. They later moved to Detroit, where both Ben and his older brother, Curtis, were born. Ben’s public school education began in 1956 at the Fisher School in Detroit. He continued through first, second, and half of third grade, maintaining average grades throughout. When he was five years old, his mother discovered that his father had a previous family and was not divorced from his first wife. At the age of eight, in 1959, his parents separated.

His mother moved him and his brother to her nursing home in the Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. There he and his brother attended a two-form school in the Berea Seventh-day Adventist Church. In 1961 the family moved back to Detroit and lived in Springwells Village. a predominantly white neighborhood. While they lived there, their house on Deacon Street was rented out. Returning to Detroit public school was difficult for Ben Carson and his brother, as they both fell behind the other students because they hadn’t learned much in Boston.

As a result of not taking school seriously, his mother adopted a strict routine for her sons, reducing the time they spent watching TV and increasing their study time. She also doubled her working hours so she could continue caring for her boys. Under his mother’s supervision, Ben Carson developed a different perspective on education and began to take his studies seriously. He went from the bottom in grades to the top of the class.

He graduated with honors from Southwestern High School. He was admitted to Yale University and received his BA in Psychology in 1973. That same year, he received his medical degree from the University of Michigan, where he developed his deep interest in and specialization in neurosurgery. He received his medical degree from the university in 1977 and was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.

Ben Carson spent a year as a surgical intern at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He then worked in neurosurgery for five years, most recently in 1983 as chief physician. He was also Chief Registrar of Neurosurgery at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

Ben Carson is best known for completing the first and only successful separation of joined twins held together at the back of the head. He also completed the first successful separation of type 2 vertical craniopagus twins and developed new ways to treat brainstem tumors. At 33, Ben Carson became the youngest chief of pediatric neurosurgery in the United States. He officially retired as a surgeon on July 1, 2013, stating it was better to quit early in his game.

He transitioned into politics and in 2015 announced he would be running in the 2016 presidential race. His poll numbers didn’t stay high, however, and on March 2, 2016, he announced that he was retiring from racing. He supported Donald Trump’s campaign and called the man the voice that needed to be heard. After Trump won the presidency, Ben Carson became the vice chairman of the transition team. He declined a Cabinet position due to lack of experience, but later accepted the position of Minister for Housing and Urban Development.

Family – mother, wife

Ben Carson’s parents are World War II veterans Robert Solomon Carson Jr. and Sonya Carson (née Copeland). His mother married his father when she was 13 and he was 28. Each of his parents came from large families. They met in rural Tennessee, where they eventually married. After his military service ended, his mother and father moved to Detroit. There, at age 20, she gave birth to Ben Carson’s older brother, Curtis.

Robert Carson was a Baptist minister before he became a Cadillac worker. His mother started out as a housewife but started doing housework here and there when she was separated from her husband after finding out he had another family. She moved into an apartment building in Boston with her older sister, where she suffered from depression and attempted suicide.

When they moved back to Detroit, it was Ben Carson and his brother Curtis who are responsible for focusing more on their studies and writing two book reviews each week of books they checked out from the library.

Ben Carson met Lacena Candy Rustin in 1971 when they were students at Yale University. They dated for some time before marrying in 1975. They lived together in Maryland. The couple moved to West Palm Beach, Florida with their mother in 2013.
