Nigerian Army 𝕏 Account Hit By Cyberattack

The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over an attempted breach of its official 𝕏 account after a series of unauthorised posts promoting memecoins appeared on the platform on Saturday.

Naija News reports that the Army has activated emergency security measures to regain and maintain full control of the account, describing the incident as a cybersecurity breach.

The suspicious posts reportedly began appearing on the military’s 𝕏 handle at about 3:50 pm, raising concerns among users.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Appolonia Anele, said the military became aware of an attempt to gain unauthorised access to the account and immediately commenced efforts to secure it.

Anele stated in a statement shared on the Army’s Facebook page, “The Nigerian Army has detected and is actively responding to an attempted unauthorised access to its official X (formerly Twitter) account.”

She explained that the military had activated both technical and protective measures to contain the incident and prevent further compromise.

According to her, the steps were taken “to secure the account, prevent further unauthorised access and safeguard the integrity of information disseminated through the platform.”

The Army urged Nigerians and members of the media not to rely on suspicious information posted through the affected account until the security incident is fully resolved.

Anele said the military was working to restore complete administrative control of the platform.

She said, “The Nigerian Army assures members of the public, the media and other stakeholders that appropriate measures are underway to fully secure the affected account and restore exclusive administrative control.”

The latest incident occurred barely two weeks after the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) disclosed that its own official 𝕏 account had been compromised.
