Nigerians React As Veteran Actor Ogogo Dies

Nigerians have taken to social media to mourn the death of veteran Nollywood actor, Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.

The 66-year-old Yoruba movie star reportedly died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, after battling cancer.

Naija News reports that news of the actor’s death was disclosed in an Instagram post by actress Regina Chikwu.

A video surfaced online also with the actor’s daughter Kira Hassan, confirming her father’s death in a Tiktok live session.

Ogogo’s death came barely days after his family raised concerns over his health condition and appealed for medical assistance.

His daughters, Lima and Kira Taiwo, had recently made emotional appeals to Nigerians and medical professionals to help secure appropriate treatment for their father, who was battling stage-four cancer.

Nigerians React To Ogogo’s Death

The news of Ogogo’s reported death has sparked mixed reactions on and off social media, with grief from fans, colleagues and other Nigerians who grew up watching the veteran actor on screen.

Many took to social media to share memories of the actor, while describing his death as a painful loss to the Yoruba movie industry and Nollywood at large.

Some Nigerians expressed shock at the development, especially coming just days after prayers and appeals for help were made for the actor.

The veteran actor had become a major talking point in recent days after his daughters publicly opened up about his health battle.

In one of her emotional appearances online, Kira Taiwo had revealed how deeply the illness was affecting the family.

She also appealed to medical professionals and hospitals with the capacity to treat her father to come to the family’s aid.

Before his death was reported, several prominent Yoruba actors and filmmakers had rallied around Ogogo and his family.

A number of industry veterans, including Jide Kosoko, Yinka Quadri, Antar Laniyan, Bukky Wright, Wale Elesho, Yomi Fash-Lanso, Fausat Balogun, popularly known as Madam Saje, and Bolaji Amusan, popularly known as Mr Latin, had gathered in Lagos for a prayer session for the actor’s recovery.
