Frank Lampard Speaks After Coventry City Premier League Defeat To Arsenal

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard has urged his players to keep calm and learn from their difficult Premier League return after Friday’s 3-0 defeat to defending champions Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium.

The Sky Blues returned to the top flight after 25 years and 94 days away, but Arsenal proved too strong, scoring all three goals within the opening 49 minutes. Coventry managed only one shot on target, yet their supporters stayed behind the team and sang throughout the match.

“A few years ago this club was in League Two, playing in a different stadium,” Lampard told Sky Sports. “When we came in, we were 17th in the [Championship] league. The boys have risen, the team have risen, and the connection with the fans has been amazing. They have been a huge strength for us. They have to remain that way, and the lads have to give everything.”

Lampard took charge in November 2024 after long-serving manager Mark Robins left and helped complete Coventry’s long journey back to the Premier League. Their previous appearance in the top flight came on 19 May 2001, when a goalless draw against Bradford City ended their 34-year stay.

The years that followed brought relegations, ownership problems and ground issues. Coventry spent a season in League Two before working their way back up, returning to the Championship as League One champions in 2020. Six years later, they are back among England’s elite.

The club backed Lampard heavily in the transfer market, spending about £130 million and breaking their transfer record four times. Frank Onyeka, Aurele Amenda, Loum Tchaouna, Carl Rushworth and record signing Caleb Yirenkyi all started at the Emirates, while Gustavo Hamer and Nigerian striker, Taiwo Awoniyi came off the bench.

Despite the investment, Arsenal’s quality showed on the night. Lampard, however, believes his players will benefit from the experience as they begin to understand the demands of the Premier League.

“It’s a good learning curve for our players,” he told Match of the Day. “You come here and want to do something, but it’s very difficult. It’s a good experience to live. We hate defeats, but you can lose here, and there is a lot to be done to do what we want to do this season so that we will take the learnings.”

Lampard also pointed to Leeds United’s experience at the Emirates last season, when they lost 5-0 but still managed to retain their Premier League status.

“It’s hard. Leeds United came here early last season and lost 5-0 and stayed in the Premier League,” Lampard added. “I’m not making any early judgements. We will have to acclimatise.”

The Sky Blues now face fellow promoted side Hull City at the Coventry Building Society Arena next week. They have away trips to Manchester City and Nottingham Forest also coming in September.
