Defence Headquaters Recovers Hacked 𝕏 Account

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has regained control of its official 𝕏 account two days after reporting an attempted cyberattack on the platform.

Naija News reports that the military authorities confirmed the recovery on Monday in a brief post shared through the account.

“WE’RE BACK. Thank you for your patience and continued support,” the post read.

The development followed a statement issued on Saturday in which the DHQ disclosed that its 𝕏 account had been targeted in an attempted unauthorised compromise.

In the earlier statement, the Director of Defence Information, Major General, Samaila Uba, said the incident was being treated as a cybersecurity breach.

Uba said, “The Defence Headquarters wishes to inform members of the public, the media and all stakeholders that it has detected an attempted unauthorised compromise of its official 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) account.

“The incident is currently being treated as a cybersecurity matter, and appropriate technical measures have been activated to secure the account and prevent further unauthorised access.”

He added that technical teams were working to restore full control of the account and protect it against further attempts.

While efforts to recover the account were ongoing, the DHQ warned Nigerians against relying on suspicious or unauthorised posts that might appear on the platform.

Uba said, “The Defence Headquarters assures the public that efforts are ongoing to fully restore control of the official account

“Consequently, members of the public are advised to disregard any suspicious, unauthorised or misleading content that may be posted from the account during this period.”

The military also urged members of the public to rely on its verified Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp channels for official information until the 𝕏 account was secured.

Uba said the Defence Headquarters remained committed to maintaining high standards of cybersecurity and protecting its official communication channels.

He added that the military would continue to ensure that Nigerians received accurate, timely and credible information on the activities and operations of the Armed Forces.

The DHQ also thanked the public for its patience, vigilance and cooperation during the period of disruption.
