Residents Beg Wike For Help As Flood Wreak Havoc In Abuja

Abuja residents have cried out for help after heavy rainfall disrupted movement across parts of the Federal Capital Territory.

Naija News learnt that the floodwaters overwhelmed major roads and residential areas on Saturday, August 15, forcing motorists to a standstill and some businesses to close.

Affected areas include Adetokunbo Ademola Crescent in Wuse 2, the area around Delight Event Centre in Gudu and parts of Efab Estate in Lokogoma. The bridge linking Gaduwa and Durumi.

Several vehicles were also submerged, while buildings were also covered by floodwaters. Many commuters were forced to seek alternative routes to avoid damage from the floodwaters.

‎In a video sighted online, a resident who captured the situation on the Ebeano-Gudu road appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to intervene and address the flooding.

‎“Dear Honourable Minister of the FCT, please come to our rescue. This is the current situation of Ebeano/Gudu Road. The bridge is flooded.
‎
‎“People coming from Gudu junction can’t cross; people coming from Ebeano can’t get to Gudu. Mr Project, please come and help us,” the resident noted.

In other news, Wike has shut the Secretariat of the dissolved Ad-hoc Committee on Sales of Federal Government Houses (SFGH) in the FCT.

Naija News reports that the development was announced in a statement issued last week Wednesday by the Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Lere Olayinka.

Olayinka disclosed that the minister also approved the creation of a division in the Department of Land Administration to handle matters relating to the sale of Federal Government Houses in the FCT, a responsibility hitherto carried out by the defunct SFGH.

According to the statement, the Secretariat had been retained after the completion of the Ad-hoc Committee’s assignments to attend to issues arising from the committee’s activities, but has now been formally shut down alongside the dissolved committee.

“With the formal closure of the Secretariat, the general public is enjoined to henceforth, approach the Department of Land Administration on all issues relating to sale of Federal Government Houses in the FCT,” the statement read.

The FCT Administration also cautioned members of the public to be wary of fraudsters parading themselves as staff, officers or members of the defunct Ad-hoc Committee and its Secretariat, stressing that both bodies no longer exist.
