IGP Orders Nationwide Seizure Of Vehicles Without Number Plates

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has directed police units across Nigeria to begin a nationwide operation targeting vehicles that are being driven without registration numbers or with plates that are hidden, damaged, or altered.

Naija News reports that he said such vehicles will now be stopped and taken away as part of efforts to improve security in the country.

According to Sahara Reporters, the directive was announced on Tuesday, with the police chief stating that security agencies have noticed an increase in the number of vehicles on roads without proper identification.

He said some motorists deliberately hide or tamper with their number plates to avoid being traced. According to him, this practice breaks the law and will no longer be allowed.

Disu explained that vehicle registration is not just for records but also plays a key role in fighting crime and supporting security work.

He said criminals often use unregistered or untraceable vehicles to carry out kidnapping, robbery, and other violent acts, making it harder for law enforcement to track them.

He ordered Commissioners of Police, tactical commanders, and all police formations to step up checks and enforcement in their areas.

He added that officers must apply the rules equally to everyone, with no special treatment for any individual.

The police chief warned that any vehicle found without valid number plates or with hidden or tampered plates will be seized and handled according to the law.

He also urged vehicle owners to ensure their cars are properly registered and comply with existing regulations to avoid punishment.
