ADC Confirms Advance Talks With Gawuna Over Kano Governorship Bid

Nasiru Gawuna, the 2023 governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State, is reportedly in discussions with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) over securing the party’s governorship ticket ahead of the 2027 elections.

Sources familiar with the development confirmed to The Cable that talks were ongoing between the former deputy governor and the party, although no final agreement had been reached.

A source close to the negotiations said discussions were still at an early stage.

“Yeah, it is true. Gawuna’s people approached the party with their request, but it is still in process,” the source said.

ADC confirms discussions

The Chairman of the ADC in Kano State, Musa Ungogo, also confirmed that discussions were taking place but declined to provide details.

“The story is true. But I can’t give you much detail now. Let me call you later, please,” Ungogo said.

Efforts to obtain comments from Gawuna’s camp were unsuccessful, as his media aide, Abubakar Musa, was not immediately available for response.

The development comes months after Gawuna resigned his appointment as Chairman of the Board of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria.

On March 30, 2026, his media aide announced in a Facebook post that the former deputy governor had stepped down from the position to focus on his ambition to contest the Kano governorship election in 2027.

The following day, Gawuna reportedly joined the ADC and received his membership card in Gawuna Ward of Nasarawa Local Government Area.

However, his political journey took another turn shortly afterwards when he reportedly left the ADC for the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

In the NDC, he aligned with the party’s vice-presidential candidate, alongside members of the Kwankwasiyya movement.

According to reports, Gawuna joined the NDC on May 4 and was subsequently named the party’s candidate for the Kano Central Senatorial District in the next general election.
