Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has apologised to supporters following the club’s surprise 3-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.
The match marked a difficult return to Norway for Haaland, who struggled in front of goal and passed up several clear chances on a night when City failed to find any rhythm.
The Premier League champions were stunned in the first half as Bodo/Glimt raced into a 2-0 lead, with striker Kasper Hogh scoring twice to put the hosts firmly in control.
City’s problems deepened shortly after the break when Jens Petter Hauge added a third goal, sending the home crowd into raptures. Although Rayan Cherki pulled one back with a deflected effort before the hour mark, the visitors were unable to mount a sustained comeback.
The result leaves City seventh in the league phase standings, a position that places their automatic qualification for the knockout rounds in serious doubt as the battle for a top-eight finish intensifies.
Speaking after the game, Haaland did not shy away from blame. He told TNT Sports: “I don’t have the answers.
“I take full responsibility for not scoring the goals I should have.
“I’m sorry to everyone, every Man City supporter and every fan who came to the game today. In the end, it was embarrassing.”
City now face mounting pressure to respond quickly as the Champions League campaign enters a decisive phase. Their next fixture in the campaign is against Galatasaray at the Etihad Stadium on January 28.
