Dominik Szoboszlai Breaks Silence On Mohamed Salah Amid Liverpool Uncertainty

Dominik Szoboszlai has revealed that he enjoys a close relationship with Mohamed Salah, saying the pair spoke almost daily while the forward was away at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

With Mohamed Salah expected back on Merseyside this week and a decision due on whether he will feature in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League clash away to Marseille, speculation has intensified following his recent comments about a breakdown in his relationship with manager Arne Slot.

Szoboszlai, however, was careful not to stray into sensitive territory, insisting the situation remains private.

“That’s between him and me. He will come back and then we keep on going. It’s the decision between the manager and the club,” the midfielder said.

What he did confirm was the strength of their bond during Salah’s time away from Liverpool, admitting contact was constant.

“Yes, to be honest, almost every day. We speak about everything. I’m following him, I guess he is following me. We talk a lot,” he said.

Slot said last week he was “happy” to have Salah back, and Liverpool’s frustrating draw with Burnley offered a reminder of what the Egyptian brings. The Reds dominated with 32 shots and an expected goals figure of 2.95, yet managed only one goal. Szoboszlai also missed from the penalty spot.

“That’s the first time we have played really well against a low block and created a lot of chances,” the Hungary international said. “We had loads of guys in the box, we had crosses and shots. That is what we have to aim for against Marseille but they don’t have a low block. They try to play from the back and we have to be ready for this too.”

The 25-year-old also addressed criticism following the FA Cup tie against Barnsley, after manager Conor Hourihane accused him of being disrespectful. Barnsley scored after Szoboszlai attempted a back heel deep inside his own area, a moment that sparked debate.

“Personally, it’s been a tough week,” he said. “I made a mistake against Barnsley, but I have to make it clear it wasn’t disrespectful, and I would do the same against Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea.

“I didn’t want to give it back to Giorgi Mamardashvili. I tried to pretend I was playing it back. I then missed a penalty against Burnley, but I’m going to keep on going, I’m going to take the next one, and I’m going to score, I’m pretty sure.”

Despite Saturday’s miss being his second from 22 attempts, Szoboszlai remains confident and ready to step up when Salah is not on the pitch.

“Yes, one time against the post and now the crossbar,” he added, confirming discussions are ongoing over a new contract, with his current deal running until 2028.

“The next one is in. If he comes back, he is the first penalty taker.

“He will give me some advice on what to think about when you miss as he’s missed a couple of times but he forgets what has happened.”
