CAF Opens Probe Into Chaotic AFCON Final After Walk-Off, Fan Trouble In Rabat

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into the conduct of players and officials following the stormy end to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final between Senegal and hosts Morocco in Rabat.

The showdown, played on Sunday, had been fiercely contested but largely within the bounds of a typical high-stakes final until the closing stages, when two controversial decisions against Senegal tipped the evening into disorder.

Senegal was first left furious when Ismaila Sarr’s goal was ruled out. Moments later, Morocco were awarded a penalty after Real Madrid forward Brahim Díaz went down in the box, a decision upheld following a VAR review.

The call triggered an immediate backlash. Senegal supporters reacted angrily in the stands, while tempers flared on the pitch and along the touchline.

In the midst of the chaos, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw appeared to instruct his players to leave the field.

The team disappeared down the tunnel before veteran captain Sadio Mané intervened, urging his teammates to return. The stoppage lasted around 17 minutes, during which police were forced to step in to restore order among supporters.

Díaz went on to miss the penalty, sending the final into extra time. Senegal eventually claimed the title when Pape Gueye struck the decisive goal, but the drama had already cast a long shadow over the tournament.

In a strongly worded statement, CAF said: “The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) condemns the unacceptable behaviour of some players and officials during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025 Final between Morocco and Senegal in Rabat last night.

“CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers.

“CAF is reviewing all footage and will refer the matter to competent bodies for appropriate action to be taken against those found guilty.”

The fallout did not end with the final whistle. Senegal’s post-match press conference descended into heated exchanges among journalists and officials before being abruptly abandoned.

CAF’s investigation is expected to focus on footage from the pitch, the technical areas and the stands, with possible sanctions looming once the review is complete.
