Osimhen Laments Morocco Heartbreak, Questions Officiating After AFCON Semi-Final Loss

Super Eagles of Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen has admitted that the defeat to host Morocco at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has left deep disappointment within the camp.

Naija News reports that the Super Eagles of Nigeria lost 4-2 on penalties, following a tense goalless draw across regulation time and extra time in Rabat on Wednesday. The shootout brought an abrupt end to Nigeria’s hopes of reaching the final.

Reacting after the match, Osimhen said the players struggled to come to terms with the outcome, particularly given the belief within the squad that they could go all the way.

“I think my teammates and I are all professionals, but it is disappointing and it’s hurting,” Victor Osimhen told Canal+.

“Then we have to wait more years to try to qualify again for the AFCON and try to prove a point.”

The Super Eagles forward, who plays his club football with Galatasaray, did not hide his frustration with the officiating, describing it as a major let-down on such a big stage. He singled out Ghanaian referee Daniel Nii Ayi for criticism.

“To be honest with you, today’s game was nothing to write home about in terms of officiating. It was that bad,” he said.

Despite his disappointment, Osimhen was quick to acknowledge the quality of the hosts and the atmosphere inside the stadium, congratulating Morocco on their victory.

“A big congratulations to the Moroccans. I am proud of my team for the kind of fight we put up against a very good quality side. Also, playing in front of thousands of fans,” he added.

According to the striker, the sense of loss is still heavy among the players, many of whom felt this campaign could have ended with silverware.

“Moving forward, there are greater things ahead. To be honest with you, the whole squad is sad and disappointed because I believe we could have won the trophy,” he said.

Osimhen also described Morocco as one of the toughest opponents Nigeria faced throughout the tournament.

“Yeah, one of the most {difficult} but when you play against this kind of quality team, you have to be alert at every time,” he noted.

Still, he drew positives from the way the Super Eagles stood toe to toe with the hosts and forced the game to penalties.

“For us to play them and get to penalties, it shows the kind of strength we have as a group and as individuals. But penalties are a game of luck and football, as happened,” Osimhen said.

Nigeria will now shift focus to the third-place playoff on Saturday, where they take on Egypt in a clash for the bronze medal at the 2025 AFCON.
