Enugu: Doctor Dies After Being Abducted, Shot Twice

The medical community in Nigeria has been rocked by the tragic death of a consultant neuro-psychiatrist at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (FNPH) in Enugu, Andrew Orovwigho.

Naija News reports that Orovwigho succumbed to injuries after being kidnapped, shot, and later abandoned by his captors in a disturbing incident that has sparked widespread concern over the safety of medical professionals in the country.

Orovwigho was abducted on December 30, 2025, right in front of his house by unknown assailants. According to reports from SaharaReporters, he was shot during the abduction.

The captors released him on January 1, 2026, but in a heart-wrenching twist, the doctor was allegedly attacked again shortly after his release. Sources revealed that he was shot a second time and left abandoned by the roadside.

“A good Samaritan found him and rushed him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Dr. Orovwigho tragically passed away on January 2, 2026,” one source said.

Dr. Orovwigho was a well-respected specialist known for his dedication to mental health care and the treatment of vulnerable patients.

His untimely death has sent shockwaves throughout Enugu’s medical community and beyond, as the horrific act is seen as another dark chapter in the growing problem of abductions in the state.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) in Enugu State, Dr Sunny Ken Okafor, confirmed the incident in a phone conversation with SaharaReporters.

Okafor expressed his sorrow and mentioned that an emergency meeting of doctors in Enugu would take place next Wednesday to discuss the situation further.

“We are all devastated by this senseless tragedy,” Dr Okafor said, adding that the situation would be addressed urgently in the meeting.

The death of Dr Orovwigho has raised fresh alarm over the increasingly hostile environment for medical professionals in Nigeria. With kidnappings and violent attacks on doctors and nurses becoming more frequent, many health workers are now fearing for their safety.

“Doctors and nurses are now endangered species,” said one medical professional, expressing deep concern over the rising violence against healthcare workers. “This is frightening and unacceptable. We are being targeted while trying to save lives.”
