Super Eagles stars Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi and Bright Osayi-Samuel have expressed deep sadness following a fatal road accident involving British-Nigerian boxing icon Anthony Joshua in Makun, Ogun State.
Naija News reports that the crash happened on Monday when a Lexus SUV carrying Anthony Joshua and two associates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele, rammed into a stationary truck. The vehicle, bearing registration number KRD 850 HN, was badly damaged on impact.
Joshua reportedly sustained minor injuries and was rushed to a hospital in Lagos for treatment. Tragically, his companions died at the scene. His promoters, Matchroom, later confirmed that the former heavyweight champion is in a stable condition.
Speaking shortly after Nigeria’s 3-1 win over Uganda at the ongoing 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco, Osimhen described the incident as heartbreaking.
“It’s devastating news. He’s been one of the huge celebrities that put Nigeria on the map. He’s done it for so many years. Something like this affected a lot of Nigerians. Condolences to the families of the deceased. It’s not a beautiful thing to lose a life,” the Galatasaray striker said.
Osimhen’s team-mate, Bright Osayi-Samuel, who plays his club football with Birmingham City, revealed that the news left the Super Eagles dressing room stunned.
“It wasn’t great, especially as it happened back home as well. Thankfully he [Joshua] was okay. It’s tragic to hear that two of his friends died. We just hope he gets better,” he told ESPN.
Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi also shared the team’s sense of loss, noting that the incident weighed heavily on the players.
The midfielder, who features for Beşiktaş JK, said the squad’s thoughts were with Joshua and the bereaved families.
“Man, it was a difficult one. When we heard he lost his friends, it was really sad. I hope he can recover from that. I wish him strength, and to his family and the families of the guys who died as well,” Ndidi said.
The tragic incident came barely 10 days after Joshua returned to the ring in style, securing a sixth-round knockout victory over YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.
