Obaseki Bows Out As Edo Governor, Okpebholo Set For Inauguration Today
Governor Godwin Obaseki’s administration officially ended on Monday, as the stage is set today for the inauguration of Monday Okpebholo, the incoming governor of Edo State.
Okpebholo’s ascension to office follows his victory in the September 21, 2024, governorship election, where he defeated his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The inauguration ceremony, which is expected to draw dignitaries and party faithful, will take place at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City.
Naija News gathered that the stadium is primed to host a grand event to usher in Okpebholo, who becomes the fifth governor of Edo State since the start of the Fourth Republic in 1999.
In a show of solidarity, governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) are expected to be in attendance, alongside Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, who will lead members of the Red Chamber to honour Okpebholo.
Dennis Idahosa, the new deputy governor and a serving member of the House of Representatives, will be supported by members of the Green Chamber, led by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.
In preparation for the transition, Obaseki dissolved his cabinet last week, a final move to wind down his administration and make way for the incoming government.
As it stands, there are no indications that Obaseki will attend the event.
