Lagbaja’s Death: Major Shake-Up Looms In Nigerian Army
A significant redeployment of senior generals in the Nigerian Army is on the horizon following the death of Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja.
According to findings by Daily Trust, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to announce the promotion of Lieutenant General Oluyede as the new substantive Chief of Army Staff.
The appointment, sources reveal, will be subject to Senate confirmation, after which a major reshuffle within the army is anticipated.
A senior military officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing period of mourning and lack of authorization to speak to the media, disclosed that some of Oluyede’s coursemates might be reassigned to positions within the Defence Headquarters.
When queried about potential retirements, the officer clarified that none of the generals from the 39 Regular Course would be mandated to retire. However, he noted that some would likely be posted to military service institutions.
“As it stands now, the CDS course mates, 38 RC had all proceeded on retirement since last year after Lagbaja and other service chiefs’ appointments but many members of 39 RC are still in the service. Some of them would only be redeployed,” he said
Meanwhile, President Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Abbas Tajudeen, governors and other prominent Nigerians yesterday mourned the demise of Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja.
