Tinubu’s Minister Reveals Plan For Minor #EndBadGovernance Protesters
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, has pledged to improve the welfare of minors detained for their alleged involvement in the recent #EndBadGovernance protests.
This comes after a chaotic scene at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where some of the minors reportedly collapsed while awaiting arraignment on Friday.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Olawande expressed concern for the minors and confirmed that his ministry is collaborating with the Ministry of Interior to review the conditions of the young detainees.
“Engaging with the ministry of interior towards ascertaining the facts of the situation and improving the welfare of the young people being held, not just in relation to this case, but in custodial centres across the country.”
“Please rest assured of the Ministry’s commitment to safeguarding youth interests and the welfare of young Nigerians, wherever they may be,” the minister said.
The detained protesters, who were granted bail of N10 million each, were part of a nationwide protest that lasted from August 1 to August 10, sparked by mounting economic hardship and governance concerns.
Demonstrators called for reduced governance costs, a return to fuel subsidies, food security, and stronger fiscal discipline. The protest saw instances of looting and vandalism in certain states, leading to arrests across the country.
In response to the recent developments, the prosecutor requested the removal of the collapsed minors from the charge list.
The Ministry of Youth Development, meanwhile, has vowed to continue advocating for young Nigerians’ rights in detention and custodial centers nationwide.
