Nigeria Vs Libya: NFF Confirms Demise Of SuperSports Crew Members, Policeman
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the tragic incident in which a SuperSports crew member and a police officer were fatally shot by unknown gunmen while on their way to cover the Super Eagles 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya.
The NFF also confirmed that the victims were ambushed on the Ihiala-Orlu Road in Anambra State, on Tuesday, 8th October 2024, while travelling to cover Nigeria vs Libya 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which ended in a 1-0 win for the Super Eagles on Friday, October 11.
The bandits’ attack on the bus carrying the SuperSport crew members and security personnel resulted in the loss of a cameraman, a police officer, and the bus driver.
In a statement from the NFF President Ibrahim Gusau on Saturday, the football body expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims.
Following Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Libya, the NFF president expressed that the loss of lives overshadowed the celebration of the team’s success.
“Information gathered on the incident revealed that the bandits opened fire on the bus in which the SuperSport operatives were travelling, with Staff and security personnel on board, and the attack immediately resulted in the deaths of a cameraman, a police officer, and the bus driver,” the NFF said.
The statement added, “Yes, we won the match against Libya and took three points, but the fact that three lives were lost created a situation in which we were unable to celebrate properly, and it hurts seriously to even think back at the unfortunate incident.”
