The Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh, on Friday (today) declared open the 8th edition of the Games at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
During the opening ceremony, Enoh expressed that the National Youth Games is of great importance, symbolising optimism for the rejuvenation of Nigeria’s sports sector.
The Minister underscored the critical role of grassroots sports development in cultivating young talent and enhancing the nation’s standing in the international sports arena.
In an event that gathered young athletes and officials from all over the country, the Minister emphasized the vital role of grassroots sports in fostering future champions and promoting unity among the nation.
Enoh reaffirmed that grassroots sports development is essential for establishing a robust sports industry, highlighting that this event is crucial for discovering and nurturing emerging talent.
“In today’s world, sports play a crucial role in creating wealth, promoting peace, fostering national unity, and facilitating international diplomacy. This is why the current administration, under the leadership of His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), is committed to repositioning the sector for optimal performance in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda,” the Minister stated.
In reflecting on the insights gained from the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Enoh emphasized the importance of prioritizing grassroots development.
Emoh highlighted the necessity for a framework that transcends mere talent identification, advocating for a comprehensive approach that nurtures athletes from grassroots levels all the way to elite competition.
The Minister also praised Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, for his steadfast commitment to grassroots sports, especially during a period when organizing such a significant national event poses considerable challenges.
With a record-breaking 4,585 athletes and 1,159 officials approved for participation in this year’s National Youth Games, this edition is set to be historic. Furthermore, Enoh expressed gratitude to the Governors of the participating states and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory for their consistent support and sponsorship of their respective state delegations.
He urged athletes and officials to embody the spirit of fair play, encouraging them to compete honourably and adhere to the established rules.
“This year’s edition of the National Youth Games presents yet another opportunity to initiate the process of athlete development for the next generation of Olympic and Paralympic champions and the setting of world records,” he added.
