Former Arsenal goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, who lost his starting position to David Raya last season, revealed that he made an effort to convince Gunners manager, Mikel Arteta to reconsider his decision, all to no avail.

Aaron Ramsdale joined Arsenal from Sheffield United on August 20, 2021, for a transfer fee worth €28 million. Instantly, he became a prominent member of coach Mikel Arteta’s side.

However, coach Arteta decided to bring in Raya on loan from Brentford last season, drastically limiting Ramsdale’s game time and forcing him to join Southampton in August while the Spanish goalkeeper signed a permanent contract with the Gunners.

In an interview with talkSPORT ahead of Southampton’s Premier League match against Manchester United, Aaron Ramsdale said he made efforts to change Arteta’s mind and earn his spot back in the team.

Despite his attempts, Arteta’s decision remained unchanged, and Raya’s impressive performances solidified his position as the number one goalkeeper for Arsenal.

Reflecting on the challenge, Ramsdale acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but expressed optimism about starting a new chapter with Southampton.

“A manager’s decision is a manager’s decision,” Ramsdale said.

“I tried my best to change Arteta’s mind and force my way back in. His mind was set… and David Raya had a great season.

“It was tough but now I found a new home.”

Note that Aaron Ramsdale made 89 appearances in all competitions for Arsenal in which he kept 32 clean sheets.
