Super Eagles forward, Victor Boniface, and former Flying Eagles defender, Igoh Ogbu, made the Europa League team of the week after their respective teams won their first group-stage games this week.
The team list, which football data platform Whoscored.com published, is made of players who shone in Matchday One of the Europa League group stage campaigns.
With a goal and an assist in Bayer Leverkusen’s victory over BK Hacken on Matchday One at the Bay Arena, Victor Boniface, who has flourished since signing from Belgian club Union Saint Gilliose, continued his outstanding performance in the Europa League.
His performance against BK Hacken brought his overall tally for all games to six goals and three assists so far this season.
Before scoring in the 66th minute to help Die Werkself begin their Europa League campaign with a 4-0 victory, the 22-year-old Nigerian striker provided an assist for Florian Wirtz’s opening goal for the German side.
Igoh Ogbu, who joined Slavia Prague from Norwagian club, Lillestrøm on January 6, 2023, scored for his new club via a beautiful header in the 59th minute of the game at the Stade de Geneve in Geneva.
His goal helped the Czech professional football club to defeat Servette 2-0 in the Europa League group stage opener.
Since Igoh Ogbu moved to the Czech Republic, the 23-year-old centre-back, who is still expecting his first call-up to the senior national team, has scored two goals and provided an assist in 29 games in all competitions.
Talking about the Europa League team of the week, Victor Boniface leads the line in the 3-4-3 formation with Florian Wirtz and Joao Pedro on the flanks and Tomas Krejci and Sebastian Coates on the right side of the three-man defence.
Other notable footballers in the team are Joao Pedro of Brighton and Hove Albion, James Ward-Prowse of West Ham United, Sebastian Coates of Sporting Lisbon, and Granit Xhaka of Bayer Leverkusen.
