President Tinubu To Attend G20 Summit In India
President Bola Tinubu is set to attend the G20 Summit 2023, scheduled for 9th and 10th September in New Delhi, India.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, made this known on Friday while speaking to State House correspondents.
Ngelale said Tinubu seeks to attract foreign investments to the country during the summit, adding that the president is working to ensure that Nigeria can raise private capital from around the world for the development of its public infrastructure.
He said Tinubu will meet with world leaders and heads of state in addition to industry titans, and chief executive officers of some of the most valuable corporations in the world, especially those with Indian roots.
Ngelale said his principal would host a roundtable meeting during the summit with more than 20 chief executive officers from various economic sectors.
This, he said, is to ensure that Nigeria takes advantage of their interest in investing in the nation in a way that supports the industrialisation, digitalisation, and renewable energy agenda.
He said: “We are going to make sure, under the direction of the president, that we make the most of the opportunity to add value to the nation, to create jobs for our citizens, and ultimately, to increase and generate resources for the nation to guarantee that the government can properly finance and support its forward-thinking programmes across sectors.
“There is a lot to cover, and when we get into Nigeria the following week, there will be live updates from India, which I will provide every day to give Nigerians full access to what their president is doing on their behalf.”
Naija News reports that Heads of state and government, and other delegates from the various member countries, as well as G20 invitees, will come to Delhi for the two-day Summit.
Among those expected to attend are US President Joe Biden, UK PM Rishi Sunak, Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, Japanese PM Fumio Kishida, and Saudi Arabian King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
All About G20
The G20 or the Group of Twenty comprises 19 countries (Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States) and the European Union.
It was formed in 1999 in the backdrop of the financial crisis of the late 1990s that hit East Asia and Southeast Asia in particular and aims to secure global financial stability by involving middle-income countries.
G20 members represent around 85 per cent of the global GDP, over 75 per cent of global trade, and about two-thirds of the world population.
As a forum for international economic cooperation, it plays an important role in shaping and strengthening global architecture and governance on all major international economic issues.
The G20 Presidency rotates annually among the members – the Presidency is responsible for bringing together the G20 agenda, organising its workings and hosting summits. India holds the Presidency from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023.
After India, Brazil will take over the G20 presidency in 2024, followed by South Africa in 2025.
