Lagos: GAC Member Reveals Details Of Meeting Between Gov Sanwo-Olu And Obasa

The disagreement between the Lagos State Government and the Lagos State House of Assembly may soon be resolved following the intervention of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex leadership body of the Lagos State All Progressives Congress (APC).

Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had in July transmitted a list containing 39 nominees to the legislative arm for screening for appointment as commissioners.

The House cleared 22 of the nominees and rejected 17 others, including six former commissioners of the governor in his first tenure.

The Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, had said there was no going back on the decision of the House to reject the nominees.

Obasa had also alleged that some unnamed persons were planning to attack him and some lawmakers owing to the rejection of the 17 nominees.

Following the controversy, the GAC met with Sanwo-Olu and Obasa behind closed doors on Wednesday, a meeting which was believed to be connected to the issue of rejection of nominees.

Speaking to The PUNCH on Thursday, a top member of the GAC, who craved anonymity, disclosed that the purpose of the meeting with Sanwo-Olu and Obasa was to wade into the controversy that resulted from the rejection of the governor’s nominees by the House.

The APC Chieftain said: “The GAC as an elders’ group met with the governor and the Speaker to intervene in the situation.

“Our discussions remain within the GAC as it is our custom, so we cannot make details of our discussions public. I’m sorry about that.”

The GAC member added, “What I can tell you, however, is that the meeting was not about settling any fight between them, as there was no such thing as fighting. What we have done was to listen to both of them and ask them to go back and meet, just the two of them, and settle whatever differences they have with regards to the nominees.”
