PDP Crisis: G5 Governors Push For National Convention, Make Fresh Demand For Southwest Chairman

The aggrieved Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) popularly called the G5 have begun fresh moves to ensure the party produces a substantive chairman from the southwest region.

This follows the ouster of embattled Iyorchia Ayu as the PDP National Chairman and his replacement with the Deputy National Chairman, (North), Umar Damagum in an acting capacity.

According to reports, the G5 Governors led by the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, have communicated their support for the acting National Chairman, and have informed him of the plan to ensure the Southwest gets the national chairmanship position as a condition for the crisis rocking the party to be resolved.

A member of the National Executive Committee of the party close to the Wike camp was quoted by The Whistler to have said Ayu’s ouster was “a clear ambush but he didn’t realize it.”

The NEC member who’s also a House of Representatives member-elect explained that, “whether the signatures that formed the basis for Ayu’s suspension were fraudulent or not, it’s left for the court to decide but he’s out and you can see the people who mean well for the PDP are celebrating.”

The lawmaker-elect added that the G5 are making their moves to ensure Ayu does not return.

“It’s operation ‘new national chairman’ now and no longer whether the election is over or not. Besides, no one knows what the tribunal may decide in the face of the overwhelming incidence of rigging in the last presidential election,” the Member-elect explained.

Naija News recalls Ayu was on Sunday suspended by the Igorov Ward Executive Committee of his party in Benue State for alleged anti-party activities and failing to win his polling unit, ward and local government for the party during the general elections.

In reaction, Ayu had declared his suspension unconstitutional but a member of the party from Benue State, Conrad Utaan, obtained an ex-parte court order to restrain Ayu from parading himself as the chairman of the PDP.

On Tuesday, Ayu had to step aside as the PDP National Chairman until the determination of the suit and was replcaed by Damagum in an acting capacity.
