Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has admitted that he and his teammates let themselves down by being defeated by lowly-rated Guinea-Bissau at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Friday.

Recall that Guinea-Bissau defeated the Super Eagles of Nigeria 1-0 in Abuja on Friday which helped them to dethrone the Nigerian team as leaders of 2023 AFCON qualifiers Group A.

Three days later, they had the chance to redeem themselves from the embarrassing defeat when they flew to Bissau for the return leg.

Fortunately, Bright Osayi-Samuel’s run into Guinea Bissau’s eighteen-yard box in the 29th minute made all the difference. He was fouled in the box which forced the referee to award a spot-kick to Nigeria. Moses Simon stepped up and converted it in the 30th minute. The goal earned Nigeria a 1-0 win that returned them to the top of Group A, two points above second-placed Guinea Bissau.

In his reaction, Semi Ajayi who spoke with NFF TV on Tuesday said the Super Eagles had to make things right in the return leg after letting themselves down in the home game.

“It was a very important result in terms of our qualification for the AFCON tournament. It put us back on top of the group and in pole position,” he said.

“We know we let ourselves down on Friday and it is good to be able to put that result right and come home with the win.”

On how he feels to represent the Super Eagles of Nigeria, Semi Ajayi added, “It is a blessing, honestly, anytime I am called to play for my country, whether it is one minute or it is 90 minutes, it is something I don’t take lightly, to be allowed to represent my country.

“In fact, I was able to start today and help the team pick up a very valuable win. That is all that matters to me.”
