The Super Eagles of Nigeria managed to beat the Wild Dogs of Guinea Bissau in the return leg of the 2023 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers by a lone goal but some ex-internationals were not impressed with the performance of coach Jose Peseiro and his team so far.

The Group A of the AFCON qualifiers is seen as a group coach Jose Peseiro and his boys should win with ease but it has not been as anticipated.

In the first game in the group, Nigeria struggled to beat Sierra Leone 2-1 in Abuja. But in the second game, they defeated Sao Tome and Principe 10-0 away from home.

However, after that game, coach Jose Peseiro has led the Super Eagles to three defeats in friendly games and then a stunning 1-0 defeat to Guinea Bissau in the first leg of the AFCON qualifiers tie at MKO Abiola National Stadium.

Fortunately for the Nigerian team, they were able to bounce back from the defeat in the first leg to beat Guinea Bissau 1-0 away from home on Monday. It was Moses Simon’s 30th-minute spot-kick that made all the difference.

The win returned Nigeria to the top of Group A with 9 points, two points above second-placed Guinea Bissau.

However, most football enthusiasts like retired Super Eagles players Dosu Joseph and Ifeanyi Udeze were not happy that the team played so badly that they could not score from open play in the home and away tie despite having some of the best strikers in the world.

Dosu said, “All we need now is to get the victory, they are playing to qualify for the 2023 AFCON. We want a coach that will coach our national team and give our boys the best, we watched today’s (Monday) game and we asked ourselves, ‘is it the same Super Eagles we used to know?’ As for Paseiro, the NFF needs to do something.

“When he was employed they said he was the best man for the job, we have seen it, he has played eight matches, and lost four matches, the records show. Nigerians have been clamoring for him to say goodbye. We want our national team to play good football and qualify for tournaments. Striker Victor Osimhen has been giving us joy each time he plays for Napoli and the rest of the players for their clubs, but when they come to represent Nigeria, they struggle.”

While Udeze added, “I am not satisfied with the Super Eagles’ performance against Guinea-Bissau in the return leg, if not for Bright Osayi-Samuel, who finds his way to the opponent box, and we got a penalty.

“We scored from the penalty spot, we did not score from open play. We still have a lot of work to do, but the most important thing is that we won the game.

“The team needs to improve in their style of play. We want our team to play good football and win well, play with confidence, and create lots of chances, not just win through penalty. If Paseiro cannot do that, he needs to go.”
