I Didn’t Know Him Before – Wike Recounts How Ortom Vouched For Ayu
The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has claimed that he never knew the embattled Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, before.
Naija News reports that Wike said but for his counterpart in Benue State, Samuel Ortom, he would not have known Ayu.
This is as the governor, who spoke on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, recalled how Ortom was instrumental to Ayu becoming the PDP national chairman.
According to him, it was Ortom who vouched for Ayu’s appointment as the PDP national chairman. A move the governor said silenced those opposing him to be chairman then.
Recall that Wike, a member of the five aggrieved governors of the PDP had refused to work for the party’s flag bearer, Atiku Abubakar at the just concluded general election.
He and four other members, which include Ortom insisted that Ayu must step down from his position for a candidate of southern extract.
However, Ayu’s refusal to resign caused the PDP the support of these five governors at the 2023 polls.
Wike said “Ayu is not somebody I have had any relationship with, in fact, it was his governor (Ortom) who even told me to invite him to come and commission a project, I didn’t know ayu before, so I invited him.
“Some people intellectually, they may be sound, but when you put them on that seat it becomes a different thing.
“When we met, Ortom said he could vouch for the man, and I asked him, you are a governor, we have agreed that no chairman should come where the governor is from the senate, it always brings some crisis.”
