19 Constitutional Amendment Bills President Buhari Refused To Sign (Full List)

President Muhammadu Buhari recently refused to assent to 19 out of the 35 constitution review bills transmitted to him by the National Assembly.

The President however signed 16 of the bills transmitted to him by the lawmakers.

As previously reported by Naija News, one of the bills signed into law by Buhari makes it compulsory for the country’s president-elect, Bola Tinubu to nominate his ministers within 60 days of taking his oath of office.

Though no public reason was given for the decision of the President to reject some of the bills transmitted to him, Senate President Ahmad Lawan last Tuesday disclosed that the lawmakers have set up a committee to probe the reason why President Muhammadu Buhari refused to assent to 19 out of the 35 constitution review bills transmitted to him by the National Assembly.

He also appreciated Buhari for assenting to 16 of the bills transmitted.

Below are the bills President Buhari declined assent to.

Constitution (Fifth Alteration) Bill No. 10 (Enforcement of Legislative Summon – Sections 89 & 129): “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to compel persons to obey or comply with Legislative Summons.”

Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) Bill, No. 24, 2022 (Expansion of the Interpretation of “Judicial Office” – Section 318): “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to expand the Interpretation of Judicial Office to include Courts or Tribunals created by an Act of the National Assembly or a State Law of the House of Assembly.”

Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Fifth Alteration) Bill, No. 29, 2022 (Devolution of Powers [Airports] – Part I & II, Second Schedule): “A Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to Move Airports from Exclusive Legislative List to the Concurrent Legislative List.”
