Train Accident: Lagos Government To Charge BRT Driver With Manslaughter

The Lagos State Government is set to file a manslaughter suit against Oluwaseun Osinbajo, the driver of the staff bus that collided with a train in March.

Naija News recalls that a staff bus and a train collided on March 9 in Lagos, resulting in numerous injuries and six fatalities among the state employees.

After the collision, eyewitnesses claimed the train dragged the bus, which was carrying state employees until it finally came to a stop in the state’s Sogunle region.

Six persons lost their lives in the tragedy, while 96 more were wounded and hospitalized in state government hospitals.

Afterwards, Osibanjo was arrested and was then handed over to the police for an inquiry and potential state prosecution.

Grace Alo, Lagos State Ministry of Justice’s director of public affairs said in a statement on Friday that a case of manslaughter and great bodily harm had been made against the driver.

The statement read, “Upon the receipt and review of the case file by the DPP, a prima facie case of manslaughter, and grievous body harm was disclosed against the driver of the staff bus. Accordingly, he is to be charged with six counts of manslaughter and 10 counts of grievous body harm. Both offences are contrary to Sections 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

“The Office of the DPP will immediately file charges against the driver. However, his arraignment before the High Court of Lagos State shall be delayed until he is fully fit to stand trial, having sustained serious injuries during the accident.”
