Do This To Stop Criminals From Hacking Your Bank Account

The Public Relations Officer for Lagos State Police command, Benjamin Hundeyin, has revealed how Nigerians can easily stop criminals from gaining access to their bank accounts and losing their money.

In a Twitter thread on Friday evening, Hundeyin admonished Nigerians to simply activate locks on their Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards.

The Lagos police spokesman gave the admonition following the arrest of a criminal syndicate, Naija News understands.

According to him, members of the syndicate pick up people’s phones and discard them after removing the SIM cards. With the stolen SIM cards, he said the criminal used bank USSD to buy airtime as it usually does not require a PIN.

Hundeyin said the criminals go on to empty their victim’s account one way or the other after gaining access.

“The only SIM cards the syndicate never succeeded with were ones with SIM lock. Activate your SIM lock today,” Hundeyin noted.

Naija News understands that criminal activities have continued to surge amid the wide adoption of digital banking in Nigeria. There has been an increase in unauthorised transfers and bill payments causing banks to issue reminders to customers on how to safeguard their accounts.
