Tottenham Hotspur striker, Harry Kane has written his name in gold as he becomes the highest goalscorer in the history of England senior team football.

On Thursday night, March 23, Harry Kane captained England to face Italy in their first game of the Euro 2024 qualification series.

The game which was a repeat of the Euro 2020 final took place in Naples, Italy, but that didn’t stop England from running away with a deserved 1-2 victory.

Even though the win was a big deal as it was England’s first away win over Italy since 1961, Harry Kane’s 44th-minute spot-kick goal made headlines because the goal helped him to overtake England’s football icon, Wayne Rooney as the country’s all-time goalscorer.

Naija News recalls that Harry Kane equaled Wayne Rooney’s international goals record for England when he scored a spot-kick against France in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals match in Qatar. Unfortunately, Kane also missed a penalty in the game that contributed to England’s exit from the tournament.

But the case was different on Thursday night as his spot-kick goal helped England to leave Italy with the maximum three points even though the visitors ended the game with ten men.

Currently, Kane who is just 29-year-old has scored 54 goals in 81 games for England to become the country’s all-time highest goalscorer.

He is also the all-time highest goalscorer at Tottenham Hotspur with 204 goals in just 310 Premier League appearances.

Kane would hope to extend his goalscoring record on March 26 when England host the wartorn Ukraine in their second of ten Euro 2024 qualification series.
