The Nigeria Police said Chude Nnamdi with Twitter handle ‘@chude__’ was arrested for cyberstalking after his alleged victim wrote a petition against him.

A statement by Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi on Wednesday confirmed that Chude Nnamdi was arrested in Onitsha, Anambra State on the 18th of March, 2023 by its operatives.

Chude who is popular on social media as a supporter of the Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was said to be arrested after tweeting that Anambra’s ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) had brought the state back to the era of ballot box snatching during the recently concluded state election.

Hence, the state’s governor Charles Soludo was suspected to be behind his arrest. However, the state’s government denied the insinuated Chude Nnamdi was arrested for allegedly committing cybercrime.

In agreement with the state’s government assertion, the police said Chude breached Section 24 of the Cybercrimes Act which led to his arrest on March 18, the same day the state house of assembly election took place.

The police statement read, “he (Chude) is being investigated by the Nigeria Police Force National Cyber Crime Centre (NPF-NCCC) Abuja, for cyberstalking, under a complaint received via a petition, about his activities on social media which contravene the provision of Section 24 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015 and other criminal laws.

“Furthermore, a prima facie case has been established against him while the case file has been forwarded to the Force Legal Department for further action.

“The Nigeria Police Force, therefore urges members of the public to familiarize themselves with provisions of the law and be aware of the penalties for violating them most especially cybercrime laws with the new trends in the digital media space.”
