Naija News looks at the top happenings making headlines on the front pages of Nigeria’s national newspapers today Sunday 19th March 2023.

The Guardian: It was a return to the old order yesterday, as widespread violence, ballot box snatching, destruction of BVAS machines and intimidation of voters by hoodlums characterised what would have been President Muhammadu Buhari’s electoral parting gift to the country.

Nigerians had gone to the polls to elect new leaders in the governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections hopeful but were disappointed with what they saw.

This Day: No fewer than 17 people were killed in various acts of electoral violence in Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Cross River, Niger, Akwa Ibom, Osun, and Benue states as violence, apathy, and disenfranchisement of voters marred yesterday’s governorship and state House of Assembly elections.

The Nation: Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his All Progressives Congress (APC) appear to be heading for victory in yesterday’s governorship and house of assembly elections after recovering from the shock of the party’s unexpected defeat in last month’s presidential election in the state. Early results in Kwara State are also in favour of Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRasaq and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

Daily Trust: Massive vote-buying was recorded in yesterday’s governorship and state assembly elections across the country, Daily Trust on Sunday reports. There were reports of politicians trying to induce voters with cash and other gifts in Niger, Gombe, Kwara, Kano, Bauchi, Kebbi and many other states.
